Halloween

"In that case, I was going to play in traffic and drink bleach!"
Charlotte goes as Vendetta for Halloween. Vendetta is not pleased.

Plot Summary

All is not well on Halloween day as not one, but two Vendettas have shown up to school...which causes Mr. Milk to faint. It turns out that one of them is actually Charlotte - she dressed up as Vendetta for Halloween because she's so obsessed with the green girl. This of course royally offends Vendetta. During class, Charlotte says she wants to do everything Vendetta does, which pisses her off even more (as well as inspiring her to say the above quote) Finally, Vendetta tells the normally-blue girl that her goal for today is to destroy Charlotte, which Charlotte (pretending to not know herself as she is cosplaying Vendetta) goes along with, but suggests they make her a "nice surprise" instead.

That evening, the two go over to Vendetta's house. Char-erm, Not-Vendetta suggests ideas for something nice to do for Charlotte, like sing her a song or bake her some more sugar cookies as she's almost out of them. Vendetta says no, and reveals that she's going to make a fiend - a fiend so horrible, she claims, that once it tastes blood, it will run off in search of more and won't ever stop. While explaining this, she goes about the fiend-making process as usual, mixing ingredients together and then cooking it in the oven. When it's done, she places the pot on the table and soon enough, a big black fiend with red eyes and sharp teeth springs out.

As we'd expect, Charlotte isn't scared of the fiend at all. To Vendetta's dismay, she immediately offers it a sugar cookie, which the fiend picks up and eats. Vendetta's plan fails as the fiend now craves sugar cookies instead of blood. She tries to scold it, but the fiend disobeys her and gobbles up the rest of the sugary snacks. It then jumps out the window and runs off into the night, screaming for more cookies.

Charlotte, still pretending to be Vendetta, is disappointed but remains optimistic. She says she can still get Charlotte some candy by trick-or-treating, which she goes off to do. After Charlotte leaves, Vendetta remarks that it's "not fun" being her. Charlotte hears her and yells "Yes it is!" to which Vendetta groans.

Fiendish Findings

  • Besides Charlotte, most of the cast is dressed up for Halloween in some way. Marion is dressed as a mouse, Marvin wears a pair of antennas, Maggie wears a viking helmet, and Mr. Milk wears a tie with orange stripes. Buttons 2 is dressed up like the Giant Kitty (which is incredibly cute) Vendetta, Grudge, and Malachi aren't wearing costumes (the latter likely due to his Puritan beliefs)
  • Even while in cosplay, Charlotte can still be distinguished from the real Vendetta as her face looks the same as it normally does. She is also noticeably the shorter one.
  • Buttons the hamster has what I believe is his only "line" (if you can even call it that) that isn't just screaming here. When Charlotte shows him to Vendetta and Grudge, he grunts and imitates Grudge's scowl.
  • Buttons also followed Charlotte to Vendetta's house. You can see him chilling out on the floor during the kitchen scene. I thought I should point that out.
  • The special DVD version of this episode is in Japanese. However, instead of the normal voice actors recording, it's all done by one person. The Japanese translator's name is Junichi Ishimura.
  • The hidden message for this episode read: "The FIFTH episode of Making Fiends. Suuugar Cookieess!!! Hooray for Halloween! Making Fiends is a cartoon series by Amy Winfrey, the creator of Muffinfilms.com and Big Bunny. This is a web toon about two little girls: Charlotte and Vendetta"
Final Thoughts

I have a vivid memory of watching this episode on the computer with my dad when I was about 8. I just remember him laughing his ass off at the part where the fiend runs off yelling for more sugar cookies. That's a nice memory.

I said this in the previous review but this is one of my all-time favorite episodes. I've watched it so many times I can replay it from memory in my head. Vendetta yelling "What is this?!?" upon seeing Charlotte copying her still makes me grin like an idiot. It reminds me of this one time in preschool where everyone was threatening each other by saying "I'm gonna be YOU for Halloween!" Good times...

Vendetta's line about her life not being fun fascinates me. It's small, but a neat little glimpse into her character beyond just being mean and horrible to everyone. Does her cruel personality have something to do with her apparent self-hatred? Maybe. Probably. Who knows. Her character is explored further in Season 2 - that's when they start torturing her a little.

Also Vendetta was making bleach jokes in 2003. I'm glad we're past the point of those being everywhere on the internet. At least I think we are.

Gear up because episode 6 is also very high up on my list. We're still just getting started.
