CLAMBURGER PROFILE

Charlotte
"Monkeys never wait for buses, 'cause they have nowhere to BEEEE!!!..."

Voiced by Amy Winfrey

A curly-haired, bow-wearing blue girl from Vermont who defines the phrase "happy-go-lucky". One of the show's two protagonists, Charlotte represents everything Vendetta is not. She is cheerful, optimistic, and loves to sing - all much to the annoyance of Vendetta. Despite this, Charlotte sees them as best friends. The series' first episode takes place just after Charlotte moves to Clamburg, where she falls in love with the town right away. In the TV series, she is shown to live with her grandmother, Charlene.

Though she may seem like your average young child at first, Charlotte is actually rather bizarre. For whatever reason, she is incredibly naive (even more so than most kids) and fails to recognize obvious danger, including Vendetta's fiends. She sees them all as friendly creatures, often referring to them as "puppies". She also possesses the ability to tame certain fiends, most notably the Scissor Fiend (who she named Buttons 2, after her pet hamster) and the guard dog fiends in "Puppies, Puppies, Puppies!" Besides these irritating traits, Vendetta's hatred of Charlotte is heavily rooted in the blue girl's refusal to obey her demands like every other citizen of Clamburg. No matter what Vendetta says, does, or threatens, Charlotte retains her oblivious and happy demeanor. In fact, at several points in the series, even the other children are shown to be annoyed by Charlotte due to her lack of awareness and intense personality. Interestingly, the only two things Charlotte is said to outright dislike are strawberries and moose (the latter of which is never explained, only being mentioned on the old Nicktoons site)

Another thing that makes Charlotte stand out is the way she engages in pretend play. Instead of pretending to be something one would expect, like a princess or astronaut, Charlotte likes to imagine herself and others as telemarketers, elevator operators, postage stamps, and much, much more. Charlotte's optimism allows her to find endless joy in anything, managing to come up with happy songs about things like number 2 pencils or even being concrete-shoed at the bottom of the ocean. Wait...what?

However, despite all of this, Charlotte has been shown to "break" on some rare occasions. The most notable example is in the episode "No Singing", where Charlotte falls into a deep sadness after hearing Maggie's upsetting poem, even shown crying. She is also visibly distraught in "New Best Friend", after Vendetta "abandons" her and starts hanging out with Marion instead, but seems to get over it rather quickly.

Another major (though somewhat more implied rather than shown) stressor for Charlotte is the absence of her mother and father, explored in the fittingly titled episode "Parents". Charlotte's parents are not present at all in the show, only being seen once in a portrait on her wall. She and grandma Charlene claim they are "astronauts" and that they are living "on a space station". The authenticity of these claims are never confirmed nor denied, and fans continue to theorize about their true fates to this day. Once Charlotte meets the fiends disguised as her parents, she is overjoyed and immediately takes them out to do things with her. The song she sings in the episode expresses how much she misses them, mentioning that she would "look for them in the sky". Whether her parents are dead or really are astronauts, it's still upsetting either way.

In spite of her personality, some would still refer to Charlotte as the antagonist (particularly in the television series as she is somewhat "dumbed down" compared to her web series counterpart, though that's not saying much) as Vendetta's constant attempts to kill her may lead you to root for the green girl instead. I think they are both the protagonists; they just work against each other. Despite this, sometimes Charlotte's immunity to Vendetta's attacks become the smallest bit grueling to sit through, and you just wish that a fiend would finally chew her up. Though perhaps that wouldn't work, as she's been eaten multiple times and survived. Oh well...

One more thing I feel the need to mention is that during the development of the web series, Charlotte went through several different designs before they settled on her final look. I find this interesting as they seem to have gotten Vendetta's design down right away. Just came easier, I guess.

Fiendish Fact: Charlotte can hold her breath for 9 hours.
